Crystal Palace FC Foundation Launches Female Youth Forum

Our aim is to increase participation of Women and Girls in a wide variety of sports, physical recreation activities and in physical education.. With this in sight, CPFC Foundation launched our first ever CPFC Foundation Female Youth Forum to empower young females to own their futures!

The hope is that the forum will allow us as a Foundation to gain a better understanding of the Barriers females may face and how we can overcome them in time, enabling us to promote and provide female participant and empowerment at the highest level.

An important aspect of the Forum will be to provide a volunteering workshop. Volunteering is vital in today’s harsh economic climate where young people are struggling to gain any experience in the career path they may have chosen. We are looking to engage females and provide them with opportunities to enhance their skills and improve their volunteering experience as well as signposting potential progression pathways onto careers, apprenticeships and further training for volunteers.

This would also lead to developing youth led initiatives that tackle wider community issues for the benefit of local communities and we also strive to provide accredited and non-accredited training opportunities to underpin and support the volunteer’s experience.

  • Over half of girls are put off sport and physical activity because of school sport and P.E
  • 81% of women feel that female athletes are better role models than other celebrities
  • 80% of women aren’t doing enough exercise to stay healthy

Croydon Tackling Youth Unemployment Cup

A team of graduates from the football charity Street League were celebrating this week after claiming the first ‘Croydon Tackling Youth Unemployment’ Cup.

Around 50 young people met at Goals Elmers End to play in the tournament, which was arranged by the charity to highlight youth unemployment in the area. Street League runs an eight-week ‘Academy’ programme which combines football and education to help unemployed 16 to 25-year-olds get into work and training.

The five-a-side tournament was supported by the Crystal Palace FC Foundation, Surrey County FA, Croydon Job Centre Plus and Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC), who sent a team of volunteers to run the event and award medals and trophies.

George Parnavelas, Youth and Community Coach for Street League Croydon, said: “Current and past participants from Street League Academies across London competed, along with a team from the Crystal Palace Foundation.“There were some hotly contested games, with a team of Croydon Academy graduates eventually claiming victory over all.”

Donald Forde, Head of the Crystal Palace FC Foundation, said: “It was brilliant to see so many young people joining in the football in order to highlight what is a serious issue in the Croydon area. It’s an issue which we really want to play our part in and really pleased that the next meeting of Croydon’s new youth unemployment taskforce will be taking place at Palace.”

Kevin West, Surrey County FA Get Into Football Officer for Croydon: “The work Street League do across the area is so important in supporting young people in Croydon, and tournaments like this are a great way to reflect on the hard work the graduates have put in over the course of their Academy .”

Recently 10 organisations committed to tackling youth unemployment in Croydon came together to discuss support for young people in Croydon who are NEET (Not in Employment, Education or Training), or at risk of becoming NEET.The purpose of this meeting was to discuss how to work more effectively together to coordinate NEET-related activities. The group have agreed to share ideas and data, ultimately improving services to Croydon’s young people.

Sutton Life Centre Spring Party 30th May 2013

Crystal Palace Foundation contributed greatly to a wonderful day in the Sutton Life Centre on Thursday, May 30th. The centre (which was holding a Spring Party for the local community) was turned red and blue by a staff team of 25 including volunteers. As well as running football activities, the Foundation volunteers were found assisting on boxing and street dance sessions with some even helping in the soft play area with the bouncy castle!

These volunteers were present as part of a VRQ Level 1 youth work course (delivered by Active Communities Network in partnership wih the Foundation) and were able to showcase their skills in many different settings. The staff and volunteers proved to be a hit with the local community with many compliments on the enthusiasm and professionalism of all involved.

“It is great to see Crystal Palace engaging with the local community as they are our local Premier League club. The staff and volunteers were excellent and were very helpful all day. They represented the club brilliantly.”

Futsal is the only form of indoor football approved by FIFA, UEFA and the FA. With over 2 million players regularly participating in fast-paced 5-a-side action that rewards good technique and game intelligence, Futsal is globally recognised as one of the fastest growing indoor sports in the world. As well as the game of Futsal, students will be given the opportunity to engage in friendly 11 A-side fixtures which will be arranged throughout the academic year. Many greats from the 11-a-side game such as Ronaldo, Fabregas, Zidane and Pele attribute the development of their skills to Futsal. Extensively televised international competitions such as the Futsal World Cup and UEFA Futsal Cup allow players to showcase their talents on a global scale and ensure that Futsal is here to stay as part of the fabric of football.

As a key element of the FA’s strategy to develop the game and produce players capable of representing England and after a very successful introduction in 2010, The Football League Trust in partnership with TVS, VLUK and @Futsal are now offering this exciting and innovative programme to 16-18 year olds.

Learners will have the opportunity to train in Futsal for up to 8 hours a week with Football League coaches, under the direction of The Football League Trust. Training will be supplemented with fortnightly regular fixtures against other teams, representing professional clubs, in The Football League Trust Futsal League.
